Ladies Intermediate Championship 2014

by Stephanie Bergin
Sarsfields 4-22
Naas 1-12
Naas, fresh from their win against Castlemitchell in the first round, played host to Sarsfields for this championship match. The conditions were perfect and a free flowing game ensued with Sarsfields first out of the traps with a fine point from Emily Aulsberry. The Naas players responded immediately with a point from their full forward Cliodhna Mc Sweeney who made many a darting run through the defence throughout the match. The play ebbed and flowed but the Sash converted their possession notching up some fine points courtesy of their county player Roisin Byrne , Shauna Kendrick, Orlagh Judge and Clare Fox. This opened up a four point lead for the visitors but the Naas players were not daunted and they enjoyed a real purple patch scoring five unanswered points to lead by a solitary point . The Naas players showed great commitment and worked very diligently led by their midfielder Fiona Trant and the hard working Cliodhna Mc Sweeney and Roisin Mellett all scored a point and contributed to the Naas revival. The game was well poised at this stage but This lead was short lived as Sarsfields cleverly worked the ball out of the defence courtesy of Danielle Clerkin and Gemma Hartnett and Noelle Earley , their influential taliswoman throughout, regained the lead with a well taken goal . The Sash added further points and stretched their lead but the Naas goalkeeper Aoife Hederman was very vigilant and organised her defence very effectively to prevent further scores. Sarsfields enjoyed an eight point lead at half time on a scoreline of Sarsfields 1-12 to Naas 0-07. Naas were unlucky to concede a few scores in the closing minutes of the first half as they had put in a Trojan effort . It was testament of the strength and experience of the Sarsfield team.
The second half resumed in lively fashion and credit to the Naas players , they showed great character and went on the attack through the efforts of Naomi Curtis who won a free and duly converted it. Naas added two more points but the Sash captain Roisin Byrne led by example and took the initiative scoring two points from play. Naas replied with a Caroline Hill goal who was rewarded for all her running and effort in the half forward line. Sarsfields continued to exert more pressure and finished very strongly notching up a hat trick of goals which gave them a convincing win. It was a very entertaining match in which both teams worked very hard throughout but Sarsfields appeared stronger and fitter on this occasion and ran out deserving winners .

Match Report by Michelle Dargin Wyse: Junior C championship rd 4
St. Laurences -V- Cappagh, Tues 5th Aug.
The match between St. Laurences and Cappagh took place on Tuesday night, the 5th of August.
The first half kicked off in ghastly weather with rain beating down. This half was mainly dominated by the Larries ladies with 4 goals reaching the back of the net. This was due to great football by Pam Grufferty, Clodagh Glynn and Kim Mackey. The Cappagh girls also played well and managed to score a goal and 6 points in this half, unfortunately this was not quite enough to top St. Laurences' score of 4-2 at half time, leaving the home team ahead by 5 points.
As the second half kicked off the rain appeared to stop being replaced by darkness and flood lights. The wind was blowing in St. Laurences favour, unfortunately this was not enough. Although this half was a lot more balanced than the first throughout, Cappagh unleashed an inner strength within the last five minutes and managed to overpower their opponents. Thanks to this final push the game saw Cappagh finishing on top by 2 points, with a final score of; Cappagh 4-10, St. Laurences 5-5.
Players who excelled on the night for St.Laurences included; back Melissa O' Neill, Kim Mackey and Pam Grufferty in the forwards, Clodagh Glynn in mid-field completed by strong runners on the night who were Lydia Byrne, Emma Dargan and Aine Dunne.
The Cappagh girls that shone were, Kayleigh Byrne, Sinead Gormley, Joanne Mulligan, Aoife and Aine Mulligan, Michelle Confey and Laura Sheehan who all played extremely well.
