U16 girls downed by Royals

April 21, 2014
U16 Leinster Championship 2014
Kildare 1-06
Meath 4-09

The final round of Division 1 Leinster Championship was played in sundrenched Walterstown on Saturday. Meath were first out of the blocks and sprinted into a seven point lead courtesy of two goals from the boot of Marian Farrelly playing at full forward and a point by Kelsey Nesbitt. The Kildare team , to their credit, were not daunted and battled very well and secured a point from Samantha Cullen followed by two more unanswered points ,having been awarded two frees. Meath continued to exert more pressure but the Kildare defence weathered it very well , particularly Rose Mernagh and Amy Horan who worked tirelessly to clear the ball during the first half. Georgina Kelly , the Kildare goalkeeper also reacted very well and foiled the Meath forwards on several occasions as they came in search of goals. Kildare worked very diligently to claw back the Meath lead and Kayleigh Humphries scored a fine point to complete the Kildare tally for the half. Meath finished this half with a flourish as their ever reliable Katie Bellew at mid field was rewarded for her trojan efforts and rattled the back of the net with her team's third goal. Meath enjoyed a six point lead at the interval but they worked hard against a competitive Kildare team. The half time score was Meath 3-2 Kildare 0-5.
Meath resumed the second half in confident mood and struck again within five minutes of the start when Kelsey Nesbitt stretched their lead with another goal .Kildare continued to try to counteract the Royal county as they passed the ball cleverly up the pitch but were unable to convert possession into much needed scores until late in the second half when they were awarded a penalty as Aisling O'Connor was fouled . Kate Hannon struck the penalty confidently , just rewards for her efforts and those of her fellow forwards. In spite of all the Kildare efforts , it was difficult to stem the flow of Meath scores as Aoibhinn Cleary from her half back position ,added three points to her team's tally. Sabrina Kennedy , the Kildare centre back and her fellow half back Louise Scully made concerted efforts to prevent the Meath forwards advancing while providing some possession to their forwards particularly in the second half .Meath emerged as deserving winners but the Kildare team showed great tenacity and determination throughout the match and should be commended for their spirited performance and this experience should benefit them in their next match in the championship.
