Kehoe Cup: Students sink Kildare aet
January 30, 2012
GMIT claimed a place in the last four of the Kehoe Cup with a 1-17 to 1-16 win over Kildare after extra time at Newbridge on Saturday.
The home side led by the bare minimum at the interval - 1-7 to 1-6. Chris Bonus got the Kildare goal after 10 minutes before the students hit back with a goal of their own courtesy of Mayo's Ken Feeney.
The Lilywhites maintained the upperhand in the second half however the sending off of Paul Divilly seemed to be a turning point as GMIT used their advantage to good effect.
A late point from GMIT substitute forced the game to extra time - full time score 1-12 to 1-12.
In the first half of extra time Kildare were reduced to 14-men once again after Paudie Reidy was dismissed. Leading by two entering the second half, GMIT stretched their lead further with a free from Hanrahan.
Kildare fought back to reduce the deficit to one point but were unable to match the students after a number of chances went to waste.
