McGeeney Croker plea turned down

June 30, 2009
Kieran McGeeney's request to allow his Kildare team train in Croke Park ahead of Sunday week's Leinster SFC final against Dublin has been turned down. The former Armagh star called for the ban on pre-match training sessions at GAA headquarters to be lifted in the aftermath of the Lilywhites' semi-final win over Laois on Saturday. He expressed the fear that Kildare will be at a major disadvantage to the Dubs as all three of their championship outings to date have been played outside Croke Park. But the GAA insisted there would be no exceptions to the ban on football and hurling teams using the pitch in preparation for championship matches. McGeeney said on Saturday night: "We'd be hoping we're going to get a bit of a training session on it because everyone else (international rugby and soccer teams) seems to be able to get a training session in there," the Lilywhites manager said. "Someone will probably tell me 'no' because we went to it before and we were told we couldn't even walk on it, which was quite unusual, but hopefully we'll get a training session in the next two weeks on it."
