McGeeney wants Croker training ban lifted

June 29, 2009

Kildare boss Kieran McGeeney
Kieran McGeeney called for the ban on pre-match training sessions at Croke Park to be lifted in the aftermath of Kildare's Leinster SFC semi-final demolition of Laois. The former Armagh All-Ireland winning captain was also eager to play down the hype that is certain to sweep across the Shortgrass County in the lead-up to the Leinster final against Dublin on July 12. McGeeney fears Kildare will be at a major disadvantage to the Dubs as all three of their championship outings to date have been played outside GAA headquarters. "We'd be hoping we're going to get a bit of a training session to it because everyone else (rugby and soccer teams) seems to be able to get a training session in there," the Lilywhites manager said. "Someone will probably tell me 'no' because we went to it before and we were told we couldn't even walk on it, which was quite unusual, but hopefully we'll get a training session in the next two weeks on it." McGeeney was doing his best to dampen down expectations as he reflected on his side's latest impressive victory. "You can read a lot into it, but the fact of the matter is you don't get anything extra for winning by more. "We pushed on, which is encouraging but we could play Laois tomorrow and get a different result. When you get your chances, you have to take them and the good teams do that, the Tyrones, the Galways, the Dublins and Kerrys. When they get on top, they are able to put away their scores."
