Kildangan GAA Notes
June 22, 2009
Under 6's & 8's
The youngest of our Club stars took to the field on Saturday morning to take on Nurney in a number of Go-Game Blitz matches. With just about 80 children playing in a total of four games at the same time, it was certainly a busy place for the hour.
Both of theUnder 6 games proved to be highly entertaining with lots of our players showing great promise.
In the first game Sean Fitzgerald and Sophie Carroll lead the charge for Kildangan with great performances. In the second game Cormac Finnegan and Cian Murtagh had a good first half getting some great scores. Rory McGrath had a great second half even though some of his tackling was more akin to Rugby. Star of the day was undoubtedly Faith Delaney who finished the game with an incredible 9 goals! Certainly one for the future.
The 8's played some great stuff with Rory Kenna, Matthew Mulvihill, Ben Keogh and Conor O'Neill just some of the many players to feature.
Under 11's
The Under 11's traveled to Round Towers on Saturday afternoon to take on Rathangan in the Division 2 Shield Final. A very competitive first half saw Kildangan go in front thanks to some well taken points by Jamie Kearns, Robert Hanley and Ryan Moran. Rathangan fought back with three goals in succession to knock the stuffing out of Kildangan and leave them 4.2 to 1.5 up at half time.
Rathangan tried to kill the game off early in the second half but found Daniel Cawley performing heroics between the posts for Kildangan. Great defending by Orla O'Donovan and Luke Barry, along with tireless work by the outstanding Josh Francis, prompted Kildangan into action. A Kildangan goal followed by two well taken frees from Robert Hanley brought Kildangan to within a goal of their opponents but Rathangan found the net again late on and went on to win on a scoreline of 5.8 to 2.9.
This was a very courageous and spirited performance by a Kildangan team who did so well to get to the final following their promotion from Division 3 last year.
U14 Grange 5-8 Kildangan 3-9
The boys put in a gutsy away performance to Grange on Wed last when they came up just short in the finish on a scoreline that doesn't do justice to how close the game was. Playing with the wind in the 1st half Kildangan were slow to settle. A goal by Conor Hyland put Kildangan ahead at the break by a single point 1-6 to 1-5.
It was going to be backs to the wall for the second half. Kildangan got a great start when Robert Hanly hit the net in the opening minute. Kildangan held this lead for almost all the second half until Grange got a fortunate goal when a shot meant for a point dipped under the crossbar. Kildangan didn't fade and driven on by Daniel Howard in the half backs they came forward and cut the gap to 2 points with a Barry Leavy goal. Grange had the final say with a goal on the break to seal the win in the final minute.
Scorers for Kildangan were Robert Hanly 1-3, Barry Leavy 1-2, Conor Hyland 1-1, Michael Dunne 0-1, Jack Hickey 0-1.
