O'Sullivan, Mike

The late Mike 'Ned' O'Sullivan Pure gentleman will be sorely missed by all The sudden death of Mike 'Ned' O'Sullivan had saddened the parish of Glenbeigh. Mike was the eldest of six children of Denny and Molly O'Sullivan of Keelnabrack Glenbeigh. He had three brothers - Denis, Patrick and Connie and two sisters - Bridget and Mary. Mike was married to Mary O'Sullivan of Rossbeigh and the couple had two children - John Michael and Patricia who were his pride and joy. He was employed for 33 years with Kerry County Council where he was a valued and conscientious worker who was often called out in an emergency and could always be relied upon to take the call. An all-round sportmans he was greatly respected throughout the county. He loved basketball and was involved in the local club from 1958 to the early '80s both as a player and in management and was a leading light in the organising of the local blitz every year. He also loved the game of hand-ball and kept up this tradition in the parish and is followed in the sport by his nephew Leon. Mike was well known as a formidable darts player who played in local and county tournaments; he represented 'The Ross Inn' in many tournaments throughout his life. He was a big Man-United fan and followed their progress with huge interest but it was GAA that was his first love. He was the corner forward of the Glenbeigh/Glencar Senior team in 1964 - at the age of 17 - and won a Mid-Kerry Championship medal. He also won championship medals in 1974 and 1975 and throughout his life he won five mid-Kerry League medals as well. When the Glenbeigh/Glencar field was opened in 1986, Kerry played Cork with Mike as the linesman and Denis Guerin as referee. It was great standing to the man that he was never involved in controversy in any match and was well-respected. Mike was a huge all round supporter of the GAA and could be seen up and down the county following all grades. He was a huge influence on is nephew Darren O'Sullivan, in whom he took great pride and all his dreams came true when Darren came on in the 2005 All-Ireland final. Mike will be sorely missed and the one description that keeps coming up of this quiet and gentle soul is that he was 'a pure gentleman'. May he rest in peace. Courtesy of The Kerryman 5 January 2006
