O'Connor opts to remain in hot seat

October 04, 2005
Outgoing Kerry football boss Jack O'Connor has decided to remain on at the helm for at least one more year. Following the completion of his initial two year term, which culminated in defeat to Tyrone in this year's All-Ireland SFC final, there was much speculation about O'Connor's willingness to remain in charge. However the popular schoolteacher had decided to seek another season in charge after discussing the issue with his management team of Ger O'Keeffe, Johnny Culloty and trainer Pat Flanagan over the past weekend. The position of Kerry team-manager will be sorted out on Tuesday next but since O'Connor looks certain to be the only candidate for the post, his ratification looks to be a certainty. Although O'Connor himself has failed so far to comment publicly on what some might see as a U-turn, his selector Ger O'Keeffe gave some insight into O'Connor's thinking. "I suppose it came down to unfinished business. "Our first reaction was to go leave it to somebody else but then you think there was only a score in it at the end. "Tyrone have improved dramatically from 2003, so have we, but the bar has been raised higher every year to the point that I don't know where it is going to end."
