O'Dwyer: Gaelic football is becoming like basketball, like soccer

Mick O'Dwyer has compared gaelic football to basketball and soccer due to the over reliance on the hand pass in the modern game.

The eight-time All-Ireland winning manager lamented the decline of the kick pass when speaking to The Examiner.

"The one thing about the game is that it is evolving all the time," he commented.

"New methods are filtering into the game. Donegal brought the defensive structure and that won them an All-Ireland. A lot of teams have since copied it.

"I think the foot should be used more than is the case presently. Gaelic football is becoming like basketball, like soccer.

"That is the way the game is going. I think the people are still enjoying it, though. The crowds at games are still very strong."

Meanwhile, turning his attention to Saturday's Munster SFC final replay, O'Dwyer believes extra-time could be required to separate the arch rivals.

"Kerry supporters came to Killarney on Sunday week last expecting Kerry to win pretty well.

"Cork put up a fantastic show. They played with great fire and spirit. The Kerry team at present don't seem to be playing that well. I don't think Kerry will be as lethargic as they were the last day.

"I fancy another draw with Kerry to shade it in extra-time."
