The late John Finucane 1931-2013

John Finucane, Piermount, Carhoona, Tarbert, died peacefuny on Friday, July 12. John was born on October 3,1931, at Piennount Tarbert the second of four children to Tomas and Mary Finucane (nee Lynch). He attended Tarbert NS and St Brendan's College, where he excelled at sport especially athletics and Gaelic football. On the death of his older brother, Thomas, who died at a young age, he came home to help on the family farm. As the years progressed John embraced farming and grew his herd to a very high standard, he broadened his business by investing in farm machinery setting up his own agricultural contracting business in the mid-seventies. He met and married Ann Sheehan, the love of his life in 1962. He was a dedicated and devoted husband and father, their love spanned a 51-year marriage blessed with six sons.
He was devoted to his children and later his daughters-in-law and his 16 grandchildren and they loved him in return. He always had time to answer their many questions of the olden days and they loved the stories he told them.

He had a deep bond with his sister Ena and her family and with all the Sheehan in laws and all his relations especially his cousin Brendan who was as dose as a brother. They discussed all aspects of farming and always got each others advice on any project they were to undertake. John gave generously to his local community and served on many committees. He was on the church finance up to a few weeks before his death. His family will be eternally grateful for the support they gave him in the past few months and to Timothy for driving him there every Sunday when he could no longer drive himself. He was a man of great faith and was one of the first Eucharistic Ministers to serve in Tarbert.

That faith gave the family great strength in his final weeks he always counted his blessings and was grateful for the ftdl life he lived.
No stranger to hard work he had a passion for the farming life which he excelled at over his long life. He was a model fanner always keeping up to date with all aspects of farming..It was through farming he travelled far and wide as part of the directors of Kerry Co-Op.

He also travelled to visit his families who settled in the US. He had a great love of Gaelic football and played for many years at minor and senior levels for Tarbert. He was proud of his grandson Sean who played on the winning team of the North Kerry minor championship in 2011 which he himself had won in 1948.
He loved Tarbert football, never missed an All-Ireland always with two or three of his sons.

In his final weeks his family cared for him at home with love and devotion and where they were able to say their final goodbyes. John slipped away quietly from this world in the home he loved surrounded by his devoted wife and sons, daughters-in-law and some of his grandchildren in the early hours of Friday, July 12.
The widespread respect in which he was held was demonstrated by the huge attendance at the removal and at his Requiem Mass concelebrated for the happy
repose of his soul by his lifelong friend Fr. John O'Connor, Fr. Daimy Broderick PP and Fr Steve Kennelly. The hearse was flanked on either side by a guard of honour from the GAA and his many friends from the various organisations that he served down the years.

John was laid to rest in Kilnaughton cemetery where his parents, brother and sister and his two infant children Patrick and Ann-Marie also rest His family wish to thank Dr Buckley and his team at the Bon Secours hospital for looking after him for a number of years.
Also Dr. Lehane for the great care he gave him. Dr.Sheehan and the Palliative care nurses the district nurses, his home help Mary and for the wonderful daffodil nurses, especially Carmel who was an inspiration. The care and dedication that she showed him will be forever remembered and appreciated by his family.

Finally to his friends and neighbours, the family would like to offer their most sincere thanks for your comfort and support over the past weeks and months.
A loving, caring and generous man he will be greatly missed by his loving wife Ann, sons Thomas, Sean, Kevin, David, Michael and Padraig, his sister Ena, and by his 16 grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and friends.
