Kieran enjoyed very healthy years following his lung transplant

On Thursday morning the 29th of November, Kieran Treacy, Listrim, Ardfert passed away peacefully at the Mater Hospital Dublin.

Kieran was born on the 13th December 1973, the youngest of four children born to Denis and Mary Treacy. Kieran's parents were concerned over his health and he was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrous but as a child, it never held him back. He attended Ardfert national school and later went on to Tralee Community College. As a child Kieran played hurling with Kilmoyley. In 1987, having come out of hospital just two days beforehand, scored three goals in the final of Feile na nGael to win his All Ireland medal. In 1991 he captained Kilmoyley to County Minor Championship success in Tralee.

Kieran began going out with Mairead McMahon in 1993. They had many happy and funny years and remained great friends right up to his death. It was during this time that Kieran found his love for horses and he still owned a horse up to the end. Unfortunately, he never got to see Blackie jump in competition. Kieran loved the outdoors and his work gardening with Peter Cannody suited him.

But his health then began to deteriorate and he spent many years in and out of hospital in both Tralee and Dublin (St. Vincent's). His mom and dad spent many years going up and down to Dublin with him. In 2001 Kieran went to Newcastle in England for an assessment to see if he was suitable for a double lung transplant and it was such a relief to all when he was put on the waiting list. He waited patiently for a new set of lungs and on the evening of Monday, November 25th 2002 he got the call to be at Kerry Airport within 40 minutes.

Kieran went through a ten-hour operation that night. Within three days he was looking forward to his new life and he could not believe how easy it was to breath. Kieran had very healthy years after his transplant.

In 2003 he was among a group that walked to Dublin to raise €45,000 for the CF Association of Ireland - the largest single donation ever received. Kieran was delighted to help out the charity, as both the Kerry branch of CF and the Association had been very good to him down the years.

Shortly after this time Kieran began to go out with Eileen Hanlon. They bought a house together in Tralee and they had many years of health and happiness there. He loved to travel but he always loved to come back and tell us all the stories of the holiday. In recent years Kieran ran his own Saoirse cabs in Tralee and was very proud of this. Kieran also had a great love for his county and he was a proud member of Sinn Fein. But over the last two years, Kieran's health deteriorated and he had a tough time up and down to the Mater Hospital. He never once complained and was always very grateful, particularly for the constant love and dedication of both his mother and father that had kept him alive for many years.

Kieran was very much a family man and he would always enquire about them while in hospital, especially his uncle Michael. Kieran was waked from his sister, Maureen Spillane's house at Ballymacaquinn, followed by Requiem Mass in the Sacred Heart Church, Kilmoyley with burial afterwards in the new cemetery,
His family and a large circle of friends sadly miss Kieran. Kieran is survived by his loving father Denis, mother Mary, brothers Denis and Declan, sister: Maureen, uncle Michael aunt Kate Pender (England), brother-in-law Timmy, sister-in-law Helen, nieces Katie, Aideen, Caoimhe, Sadhbh and Marie, and nephew Cillian.
