Denis showed bravery and determination

The death of Denis Casey, Balyspillane, Killarney, and formerly of Lahard, Beaufort, on October 27th will be a great loss to his many friends and workmates. He will be sorely missed by them all. Denis was diagnosed with renal cancer in March and battled bravely until the end.

Denis was the only son of Patsy and Eileen Casey of Ahane, Beaufort and was born on the fourth of February 1952. He attended school in Beaufort and in the old Technical School in Killarney. He had a massive interest in sport especially GAA. Denis was a proud supporter of the Killarney legion and never missed a Kerry game in Croke Park until recent years.

Denis spent the majority of his working life in the bar trade, training in the Beaufort Bar in the early sixties. He then moved to Horan's In Killarney as head barman. He then made his way to the Arbutus Hotel in Killarney where he spent nearly forty years working for the Buckley family.

It was here he met Sheila McGlynn whom he married in 1976. Indeed it was in the Arbutus that he met most of his friends. One of his proudest moments was winning the Killarney Bartender of the year title in 1987; he regarded it as a tremendous honour to receive this accolade from his fellow barmen.

In 2001, Denis overcame the loss of a leg but despite this, he continued to work in the Arbutus, a great show of bravery and determination that was typical of the man.
He is survived by his son Padraig and wife Sheila, who would like to thank one and all for the sympathy which they have received.
