Fitzmaurice opts out

Eamonn Fitzmaurice has quit his role as a Kerry selector in the wake of the Kingdom's shock All-Ireland exit at the hands of Down.
The decision of the three-time All-Ireland winner to step down leaves manager Jack O'Connor - who has yet to commit to another term - with a major void to fill alongside the other Kerry selector Ger O'Keeffe ahead of the new season.
Touted as a future Kerry manager, the 33-year-old Finuge clubman was appointed by O'Connor at the beginning of the 2009 season which culminated in the county's 36th All-Ireland title last September. However, he has now decided to opt out after two seasons of involvement.
"It's been pretty full-on for two years and I thought it was a good idea to take a year out now at this stage," Fitzmaurice said.
"Also, from the players' point of view, it is no harm to keep things fresh by shaking up the management team."
Fitzmaurice's departure could pave the way for Limerick coach Donie Bukcley to return to his native county next season. The Castleisland man has made a big impact on Shannonside alongside manager Mickey Ned O'Sullivan, and Limerick officials are desperate to keep the partnership in place for next season.
