Curley defends McQuillan appointment

National referees' chairman Mick Curley has hit back at criticism from Kerry manager Jack O'Connor regarding Joe McQuillan's appointment for last Saturday's All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Down.

O'Connor questioned why a referee from the same province as a competing side should take charge of such a major game. O'Connor was also scathing in his criticism of the Cavan official for disallowing a Killian Young goal during the Kingdom's surprise 1-10 to 1-16 defeat.

"I certainly couldn't see how it (appointing a referee from the same province as a competing team) has any influence on the game whatsoever," Curley said in the Irish Daily Star.

"Now, Jack O'Connor has a different opinion and I respect that fully. What we have tried to do before my time as chairman and since is bring the referees up to a certain standard, regardless of where they are from.

"What people have to remember is that when a referee goes out to do a job, all he is interested in is doing a good job and he is not interested in who wins the game. The basic message is that every single referee is doing exactly the same thing regardless of where they come from."
