The Late Gerard Murphy

Many tributes have been paid to the late Gerard Murphy formerly of Newmarket Co. Kilkenny and from Arklow Road, Gorey, who died on November 17after a short illness at the age of 74.
Gerard is survived by his loving wife, Betty of 46 years. Betty (nee Maguire) formerly of Ballydehob Co. Cork and his three children Elaine (Gorey), Nikki ( Waterford) and Gearoid (Gorey) and their spouses and his six grandchildren.
Born in Newmarket, Co. Kilkenny in 1934, the son of the late Michael and Ellen Murphy and one of a family of nine. His brothers Fr. John (York), James (Waterford), Willie (Tramore), Gabriel (Waterford) and the late Brendan (Newmarket). His sisters Sr..De-la-Salle RSHM (New York), Josephine Quinn (Bray), and Carmel Lynch (Kilmeaden).
Gerard joined the Forestry Department and after graduating from the Forestry College- he served in Kerry, Cork, Wicklow and Wexford and was involved in National reforestation projects. When he retired from the Forestry Department the continued in business and was working right up to five weeks before his death.
Gerard was a keen sportsman and was very much involved in hurling in his younger days and represented Kilkenny in both Junior and Minor levels.
He played for his home club (Carrickshock) and was a key player in the 1954 junior final.
Gerard loved his game of golf and was captain and President of the Courtown Golf club.
He also devoted a lot of time and effort to the local Community in Gorey and served on the Parish Council.
Gerry was a family man and loved his grandchildren and was one of life's true gentlemen and to all those who knew and loved him- no doubt he will get his reward in Heaven.
