Buckley, Ned

The Late Ned Buckley Ned Buckley, of Liosdara, Oakpark and formerly of Buckley's Chemist Shop, Castle Street, Tralee, passed away on Monday, May 11. Ned's association with his landmark shop goes back to 1940 when he opened for business, following an apprenticeship served with Kennelly's Chemists. He remained the friendly face which greeted customers for 54 years up until his retirement at the age of 79. Aged 94, Ned was born son of Dan and Molly Buckley, Scartaglin in 1915. He was born in the family shop in Cunguilla and his home place and family were always important to him. For most of his working life he successfully managed his shop with a courteous and friendly manner. One day when working on his shop he saw a beautiful young lady passing the window and he gave her a wink. She went home and told her parents what the man in the chemist shop had done. That wink sparked a love that grew and grew. Evelyn Coffey, whose family ran the Picturedrome and Theatre Royal cinemas married Ned and they were proud parents of Clement, Declan, Eddie and Susan. Evelyn and Ned worked in their Chemist's shop until Ned retired. They had a burning love for each other. Ned called Evelyn his rose and he missed her very much when she died 12 years ago. Ned was a nature's gentleman. He enjoyed life and lived it to the full. He was a hard working person with very strong moral principles and was highly regarded. They say actions speak louder than words. Ned's actions spoke volume for he as a real friend with unconditional, unreserved giving of himself. He influenced the lives of family and friends. He was always willing to give a quiet, kind word of encouragement and support and he was very discreet. Everyone was important to him. He had time for everyone and he had a lovely way with children. Ned had a great interest in sport. he was very competitive and knew how to win. He loved golf, fishing and he played bridge until he was 90. In his younger days he was a great Gaelic footballer, winning an All-Ireland minor medal with Kerry in 1933. Ned was, as all who knew him a bit of a rogue. He loved the joking and playing the Poor Ned whenever he needed to - to look for the edge on someone financially. He was however upright and honest. Ned was a man of God. He went to daily Mass in St John's across the road from his business premises. He was a man of prayer and had a great devotion to Our Lady and loved saying the Rosary. A great supporter of the Kerry Hospice Movement, it was his family's wish that donations be made to the Palliative Care Unit of Kerry General Hospital in lieu of flowers. The removal of Ned's remains took place from the Gleasure Funeral Home to St John's Church on Thursday May 14. Requiem Mass was celebrated by his nephew Fr John Kerin, PP, Scariff, Waterville on Friday at 10am. Ned passed away in his 95th year and his funeral mass was a celebration and thanksgiving for the happy memories that Ned leaves behind. We trust that Ned's strong faith will be rewarded by God. Ned will never be dead in the eyes of his loved ones, he will only be gone fishing. He was pre-deceased by his wife Evelyn and son Clement. He is sadly missed by his children Declan, Susan and Edmond, sisters Mary (Quilter) and Joan (Kerin), grand-daughters Fiona, Claire, Laura, Denise and Paula, daughters-in-law Catherine, Mary and Bernie, sister-in-law Anna, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, relatives and many friends.
