Guerin, Paddy

May 20, 2009
The Late Paddy Guerin Parishioners were saddened to hear of the death of Paddy Guerin of New York and late of Dooncaha, Tarbert. Paddy was a great sportsman in his younger days and will be fondly remembered by his football playing colleagues of the 1950s. He was only sixteen when he won a minor championship medal with his native Tarbert in 1948. He was a senior championship medal with Ballylongford in 1953. He also won a medal playing with the victorious Kerry Juniors in 1954. Paddy worked for a while in England before emigrating to America to be with the woman he loved, Clounmacon born Ann Doyle, who later became his wife and lifelong companion. He never lost the love of his native North Kerry and returned home for his holidays every year. He as a lover of horse and dog racing and was known to be a shrewd business man having invested in property in Ireland when he felt the climate was right and selling on when profit presented a pleasing return. Paddy's popularity in the US was evident by the huge crowd that called to pay their final respects and to sympathise with the family. He was an active member of the Kerryman's Association in New York and served in a number of its offices over the years. Paddy is survived by his wife Ann, daughters Ann-Maria and Margaret, son Patrick, son-in-law Jimmy, sister Maura (UK) brothers Sean Donncaha and Frank Cork, sisters-in-law Bridget, Eileen and Betty; brothers-in-law John, Anthony and George, Nieces, Nephews, Grandchildren, relatives and a large circle of friends to whom we extend our deepest sympathy. In a fitting tribute to the Donncaha man the Association formed a guard of honour at his funeral and its President rendered an oration at the graveside in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery New York, the final resting place of so many of our esteemed exiles.
