Former GAA President Sean Kelly
Former GAA president Sean Kelly has become a Fine Gael MEP for Ireland South. In what is his first step into politics, the Kerryman polled strongly in the Munster region and was elected on the sixth count with 134,712 votes, with Cork man Brian Crowley having already been elected. Kelly was able to attend yesterday's drawn Munster SFC semi-final between Kerry and Cork in Killarney, despite having fallen off a ladder while taking down one of his posters near his Killarney home on Saturday night. "I fell backwards, but I was lucky I fell into a dyke about 10 feet below the ground. I fell on my shoulder," he said. "I'm fine now. Fortunately, there was nothing behind me." Several GAA stalwarts around the country contested the Local Elections with many of them being elected onto their respective County and Town Councils. Westmeath hurling star John Shaw upset the odds by winning a seat for Fianna Fail on Westmeath County Council, but there was no joy for Offaly hurling legend and Fine Gael candidiate Brian Whelahan who surprisingly missed out on election to Offaly County Council. However, he did have the consolation of being elected to Birr Town Council.
