Galvin entitled to grant

September 25, 2008
Paul Galvin is expected to benefit from the new player grants scheme, despite the fact that the Kerry captain was suspended for much of the 2008 football championship. The EUR3.5 million Government-funded scheme was approved at last April's GAA Congress, despite opposition from some sectors of the Association, and now, with the conclusion of the senior inter-county season, the grants will be paid out to eligible players. The grants, which range from EUR1,400 to EUR2,500 per player, are designed to cover basic player expenses incurred while training and playing at inter-county level, and they must be applied for by Friday. It has emerged that partial grant payments may be made to players who did not play an entire season, and this loophole makes Galvin eligible for a grant. Cork footballer Michael Shields should also benefit, despite the fact that he only returned from a stint with AFL club Carlton in July.
