Head to head: Cooper v McMenamin

September 18, 2008
Although Cooper has been operating primarily at centre half forward this year, it would be a major surprise if McMenamin is not given the task of shadowing the Kerry dangerman. When the sides met in the final three years ago, Cooper scored 0-4 but McMenamin could feel pleased with his overall performance, especially when it's taken into consideration that the 'Gooch' is capable of racking up huge scores - his 1-8 (1-2 from play) against Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final replay being a case in point. One of their bearded brigade, McMenamin is without doubt Tyrone's best man-marker and would relish the challenge of renewing acquaintances with the game's top forward. While the Dromore man usually lines out at right corner back, he is comfortable in any position in defence as he showed against Wexford when played the entire game in the half back line. He is superb at going forward and pilfered two points against the Yellowbellies. Born in Canada, 'Ricey' didn't represent Tyrone at minor or under 21 level. However, he has proven himself as an outstanding senior and like most of his team-mates, rarely gives possession away. Composure on the ball is one of his strong points. Still only 25, Cooper is one of the most naturally gifted forwards in the game and in full flight is a joy to watch. After taking time out to travel around the US at the start of the year, the 'Gooch' has continued where he left off last year and has scored freely in all of Kerry's championship outings to date. His importance to the Kingdom was never better demonstrated than the last day when his late goal ended Cork's second half comeback. When on form, the Dr Crokes sharpshooter is unstoppable and despite his slight frame, he has the ability to win whatever type of ball comes his way. It is one of the more intriguing match-ups and should be worth the admission fee alone.
