Brady and Healy to renew rivalries
March 31, 2008
Cavan Paul Brady and Corkman Tony Healy will contest this year's DALKIA All-Ireland Senior Singles final following comprehensive semi-final victories over the weekend.
Brady defeated fellow Ulsterman, Ricky McCann (Antrim) in two straight games at Saval, Co. Down, on Saturday, turning on the style in the opening game to take it 21-3. He continued the powerful surge in the second, but McCann found some better form, losing out 21-14.
Brady, who is bidding for an amazing fourth consecutive Men's Senior Singles crown, is the current World and US champion, and will also contest the Senior Doubles semi-final this weekend.
In the second of the weekend's semi-finals, Cork ace, Tony Healy had an emphatic win over last year's beaten finalist, Dublin's Eoin Kennedy.
The St Brigid's player carried a hamstring injury into the game, and was unable to contend with the in-form Rebel. Healy took the first game 21-10, making great use of the passing shot, and in the second, he continued to dominate, sealing victory on a 21-6 scoreline.
This sets up a thrilling final next month, with the two familiar opponents, Brady and Healy renewing rivalries.
Meanwhile, in the Ladies Senior Singles semi-finals, there was double delight for Antrim's Aisling Reilly and Fiona Shannon as they came through their semi-final clashes at Mullingar,
against Kildare's Eimear Fallon and Kerry's Maria Daly respectively, to create an all Saffron finale next month.
Next weekend sees the return of doubles action, with the Senior Men's semi-finals taking place at Kingscourt and O'Loughlins. Mayo's Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann will face Dublin Eoin Kennedy and Egin Jensen, while Cork's Healy and Colm Jordan will take on reigning champions, Cavan's Brady and Michael Finnegan.
