Hannon takes over as new Handball President
March 28, 2008
While there is plenty of exciting handball fare in store this weekend, there is further action on Sunday when the annual Irish Handball Council congress takes place in Roscommon.
Despite a hectic schedule, GAA President, Nickey Brennan will be attending the event, with the Roscommon Mayor and Chief Superintendent also set to address delegates.
Tony Hannon, a native of the Sligo but living in Roscommon Town for many years, will take over the reigns as President and he is relishing the challenge of the new position.
"I'm honoured to take over as President at such an exciting time in the game's future," said Hannon.
"We've made great strides in several areas over the past few years, and I think the implementation of the extended strategic plan will bring the game to a new level during my term in office."
Hannon is a member of the St Coman's Club in Roscommon Town, where he has filled roles as Club Chairperson and Secretary in the past. He is also a well-known and respected Garda and brings a vast amount of administrative experience to the position of Uachtarán, where he takes over from outgoing President, Wicklow's Tom Walsh.
Walsh's term saw the Irish handballers mass exodus to the World Championships in Canada in 2006, and he was also heavily involved in preparations for the hosting of the Europrean One-Wall Championships in 2009.
There are 54 motions before Sunday's Congress, with most of these rooted in proposed changes to the wording of bye-laws. One of the key motions, proposed by Ulster Council, is the formation of a central fixtures committee, to be made up of four provincial secretaries.
Current treasurer, Tipperary's Ken Conway and Dublin's Eamon O'Brien will contest the position of treasurer, with Limerick's Tony Hayes returning as handball's delegate to the GAA. Congress proceedings get underway at 10.30am in the Abbey Hotel, with the inauguration of the new Uachtarán at 4pm.
