President congratulates McCarthy
October 28, 2011
Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael Criostóir Ó Cuana has extended his congratulations to Robbie McCarthy on claiming the US Open Handball title last weekend.
McCarthy became the third Irish player in history to claim the US Open title in Fountain Valley Sports club in California. It has capped an outstanding season for the Westmeath man defeating fellow Irishman, Charly Shanks, by 11-9 in an absorbing tie-break contest.
The GAA President said: "Robbie has won many honours already this year and adding the US Open title, defeating some leading handballers from around the world en route, is a wonderful and much deserved achievement. I have no doubt he will be serving up many more great performances in 2011 and beyond".
"Similarly, I would like to offer my congratulations to both Paul Brady and his county colleague Michael Finnegan who added the US Open Doubles crown to their already illustrious list of achievements".
McCarthy completes a remarkable year in which he won the Irish Open 40x20 Nationals crown and his first ever All-Ireland Senior Hardball Singles Championship title and All-Ireland Senior 60x30 Softball Singles Championship title.
