Martyn's goals help Tribe scupper Ross

July 09, 2007
The ESB Connacht MFC is back in the hands of Galway after two Michael Martyn goals saw 14-man Roscommon stripped of their title at Dr. Hyde Park. Galway 2-7 Roscommon 0-9 The reigning All-Ireland champions started brightly with points from Alan O'Hara and Kevin Higgins but they were pegged back when Galway won a penalty which Martyn dispatched with some aplomb. That lead was stretched to two before Donal Shine, a star of last year's team, brought Roscommon level with two fine scores. However, Galway finished the half the stronger of the two with points from Eoin O'Mahony and Martyn to lead by 1-3 to 0-4 at the interval. On the restart Roscommon upped the tempo and hit four successive points to take command thanks to efforts from Kevin Brady, Darren McDermott (2) and Shine. Galway hit back with a point of their own before Roscommon had Paul Garvey dismissed with twenty minutes left to play and that altered the flow of the game, with Ross adding just one further point while Galway bagged 1-3. Three of those points came in succession as the maroons went 1-7 to 0-8 ahead before an O'Hara point left the minimum between the sides with the game going into injury time. It was then that Martyn rammed home his second goal of the day to wrap up the crown for Galway and leave Roscommon looking forward to a second chance in the quarter-finals.
