Flynn, Donal

The late Donal Flynn It was with much regret and sadness that Galway's hurling fraternity learned of the passing of former Liam Mellows, Galway and Connacht Railway Cup winner Donal Flynn. Although a native of Cork, Flynn had hurled with distinction for Liam Mellows, UCG and Galway for many years and was regarded as an outstanding corner back with the county and a very solid and effective centre-half back with Mellows. In his time with the City side, he won tow Galway senior hurling championships in 1945 and '46. In both those finals, Liam Mellows defeated the Army in the county deciders which were played at the Sportsground. Flynn also won a Fitzgibbon medal with UCG in the 1940s - when the College were a dominant force in intervarsity hurling - and he was also a member of the 1947 Connacht team, which was the first West of Ireland side to win a Railway Cup. Between 1939 and 1949, Flynn was a teacher in Spiddal and while he subsequently moved back to Cork, he remained a great friend of the Liam Mellows Club and to the people of Spiddal, particularly the Staunton family.
