The Late Peter Costello The death took place after a long illness of Peter Costello of Glenmore. In his eighties, Peter Costello was one of the most popular men in the area and had worked for many years with the Bord of Works, having had a long and distinguished hurling career that spanned over three decades. During his long career on the hurling fields, Peter Costello captured one Galway Senior Hurling Championship with Turloughmore in 1956 but had previously captured three Co Junior medals in 1943 with Coolarne and in 1949 and 1954 with St. Vincents. On May 1st 1938 Peter Costello wore the number one jersey for Coolarne for the first time against Claregalway in a game that Coolarne lost by 4-3 to 3-1 but Peter went on to play for Coolarne, St. Vincent's, An Tuaisceart, Turloughmore, Galway and Connacht in a hurling career that spin nineteen years and three decades. He was proud to be a member of the first team from the parish to win a major title since 1907 when Coolarne took the honours in 1943. In 1949 Peter took his second county medal with St. Vincent's and in 1954 won another. When Turloughmore club celebrated its seventieth birthday in 1956 Peter Costello was part of the action when Turloughmore won their first Galway Senior Hurling Championship title. Peter also played with Galway Senior and Junior team and also wore the Connacht jersey during a hurling career which he was regarded as a player who could play anywhere and while he started and finished his distinguished career between the posts, he played in almost every position on the field during his years of action. Peter Costello's remains were taken from Lackagh Mortuary Chapel to the Church of Our Lady of Knock, Lackagh. Following Requiem Mass celebrated by Very Rev. Fr John D. Flannery, P.P. Lackagh, he was buried in Lackagh Cemetery. Members of Turloughmore Hurling Club formed a Guard of Honour and escorted the remains, which bore the Turloughmore colours he so proudly wore for so long. Peter Costello is survived by his sons, James, John, Willie, Raymond, Gerry, Kevin and Michael, daughters, Noreen, Mary Jo, Anna, Louise, Teresa, Christina, Loretta, Philomena and Veronica, sister -in-laws, nephews, nieces and a large circle of relatives and friends.
