Keating blasts Galway board and players

Babs Keating has had his say on the fall out between the Galway players and manager Anthony Cunningham which led to the latter's resignation on Monday.

Writing in his column for the Irish Sun newspaper, the two-time All-Ireland winner wrote of his disappointment with the county board's decision to allow fringe players in the squad "essentially have a veto" in Cunningham's reinstatement as senior hurling manager, saying that "some of those players will never pull on the Galway jersey again".

"Let's be honest, there were players who voted for the removal of Cunningham, players who were subs and wouldn't be recognised walking down the street in Galway, never mind anywhere else," wrote Keating.

"They may well have trained all year but they did they actually do anything on the field to get Galway to an All-Ireland final this year? No.

"I know that if I was one of those subs and I was asked to tick a box to vote on the future of the manager, I would have told them to f*** off. I would have been too embarrassed to vote.

"Any you can be sure that some of those players will never pull on the Galway jersey again, they won't be a part of future Tribe squads.

"Yet the county board allowed them to determine who should manage the team."

Keating also weighed in on the recent retirements in his native Tipperary, predicting Thurles Sarsfields star Lar Corbett to be next in line.

"I'd expect Lar Corbett to probably call it quits as well," he wrote. "Three players have now retired in recent days - James Woodlock, Conor O'Mahony and (Shane) McGrath.

"I feel sorry for O'Mahony in particular, because I think he had a lot more to offer than some of the players selected ahead of him in recent years. He is a big, strong player and probably didn't get as many chances as he deserved."
