Gort selector Michael Finn believes that there is a huge difference between the way games are refereed in Galway and at the top level of the game.

Finn admitted to the Connacht Tribune that the intensity of the tackling and how referee Johnny Ryan handled their All-Ireland club SHC semi-final defeat to Ballyhale Shamrocks, came as a shock to them.

The Gort selector who is also the club secretary was not criticising Ryan's performance, but did question the way Galway referees handled club matches.

"He (Ryan) refereed it fairly for both teams - I have no issue with that at all - but compared to the way referees operate in Galway, it is a totally different kettle of fish. If we are to compete at this level, we are going to have to get used to that kind of refereeing," said Finn.

"I do think it should be looked at. This is not a criticism of referees in Galway, I just think, and I am sure other teams who have come out of Galway and have gone on and had similar experiences, these things should probably be taking on board."
