Murphy on Kenny ticket

September 26, 2014

Galway minor hurling manager Mattie Murphy

If Mattie Kenny is given the green light to manage the Galway hurlers on Monday night, he will have long-serving minor manager Mattie Murphy as part of his management team.

Kenny and the outgoing Anthony Cunningham are believed to be the only candidates left in the race for the job after the interview process was completed this week. Cunningham is seeking an extension of his three-year term, but is facing stiff competition from his former right-hand man, who was involved with the St. Thomas' man in 2012 and 2013.

Despite having delivered an incredible six All-Ireland minor titles to the county since 1992, Murphy has come under pressure to vacate the minor hot-seat following last month's heavy All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Limerick. If Kenny gets the senior gig, it will almost certainly spell the end of Murphy's long reign as minor boss.

The Gort man previously had two spells in charge of the Galway seniors (1995'96) and (1999-2000), and is seen as a strong addition to Kenny's proposed management ticket.
