Joe Canning will skipper the Galway hurlers for the first time in Sunday's HL semi-final against Kilkenny.

The attacking ace will make his seasonal bow in the maroon and white jersey having missed the league campaign to date because of Portumna's All-Ireland club success and a subsequent hamstring injury.

Manager Anthony Cunningham confirmed to the Irish Examiner that Canning will start against the Cats but the news is not so good on former captain Fergal Moore who has been ruled out with a broken finger.

Centre-back Iarla Tannian and forward Niall Healy, meanwhile, are both struggling with hamstring injuries.
