Another success for St. Thomas'

May 10, 2013
St. Thomas' are celebrating again after they claimed a second U21HC 'A' title in three years thanks to a 1-10 to 0-11 victory over Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry at Loughrea last Sunday.

This latest success for the Kilchreest-Peterswell club comes just six weeks after they were crowned All-Ireland club champions at Croke Park. It also atoned for last year's final defeat to Craughwell.

St. Thomas' signalled their intentions by racing into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead. Shane Cooney then scored the only goal to put them firmly in the driving seat, but Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry fought back with four unanswered points from Shane Maloney to trail by 0-5 to 1-7 at the interval.

Maloney continued to impress as Greg Kennedy's charges narrowed the gap to the minimum, 0-11 to 1-9, with 10 minutes to go. But they were made pay for a tally of 12 wides as St. Thomas' - who only scored once in the last 20 minutes - held on for the win.

The U21HC 'B' final in Athenry on Bank Holiday Monday was another close affair. Cois Fharraige were in pole position to take the title before the winners hit eight unanswered points - including four from Conor O'Shea - to secure a 0-16 to 1-12 victory.
