Joyce losing fitness battle

Armagh's goalkeeper Philip McEvoy fails to stop Galway's Padraig Joyce during the NFL Div 1 game at The Athletic Grounds.
Padraic Joyce is struggling to be fit for Galway's Connacht SFC opener against Roscommon on Sunday week.

The 1998 and 2001 All-Ireland winning forward, who is gearing up for his 15th championship campaign, picked up a calf muscle injury in the Tribesmen's final Allianz League game against Kildare last month and manager Alan Mulholland has conceded that he is a big doubt for the Hyde Park showdown.

"He is working hard to recover but time is not on his side. There are still a couple of weeks to go but it is more important he makes a full recovery," Mulholland said in the Irish Independent.

On the plus side, Joyce's fellow attacking colleagues Michael Meehan and Sean Armstrong are making good progress in their recovery from their respective ankle and hamstring problems, and could play some part against the Rossies.
