Hollow All-Ireland victory for Loughrea school

May 04, 2012
St. Brigid's VS, Loughrea manager Martin Raferty admits he took little satisfaction from being awarded the All-Ireland VS SH title without pucking a ball.

The Loughrea side was due to play either Nenagh VS or St. Fergal's, Rathdonwey in the All-Ireland final, but Nenagh were thrown out after their semi-final was abandoned when a St. Fergal's player was seriously injured, and the Laois school subsequently decided not to play the final.

"If I'm being honest, we would have preferred to lose it on the field of play than be awarded the title," Raferty admitted to the Connacht Tribune.

"Then against, I suppose we had two great games with Athenry Vocational School (in the Connacht final) and then Causeway (from Kerry) in the semi-final. So we were rightfully there and we didn't fear anybody.

"We were looking forward to playing in the final and we are disappointed that it didn't happen. It pays very little respect to the competition in my opinion."
