New-look SHC gets underway
April 27, 2012
The restructured Galway SHC commences this weekend with a full round of games down for decision.
There is a great deal more at stake in the first round games under the new structure, which should make for some tasty encounters. The tie of the round is undoubtedly the meeting of holders Gort and their near-neighbours St. Thomas. That takes place in Athenry on Sunday evening.
The action begins on Saturday evening with two double-headers in Athenry and Ballinasloe. At Kenny Park, Ardrahan take on Kinvara, while 2010 champions Clarinbridge face Beagh. In Duggan Park, Kiltormer meet Castlegar and Tynagh/Abbey-Duniry clash with Padraig Pearses.
In Loughrea on Sunday afternoon, Carnmore meet Tommy Larkins and Craughwell square up to Mullagh. At the same time in Ballinasloe, Portumna begin their campaign against Sarsfields, while Turloughmore meet Liam Mellows in Pearse Stadium.
Finally, there is a double-header in Athenry on Sunday evening which sees the host club square up to Loughrea and Gort in opposition to St. Thomas'.
