Kernan facing acid test
February 07, 2010
Joe Kernan is looking forward to his first big test as Galway manager in McHale Park today.
Since taking over the reins from Liam Sammon last September, Kernan has seen his new charges beat New York in the Connacht FBD League final and qualify for this year's final against Mayo on February 21 on the back of three straight wins.
But this afternoon's eagerly-awaited National League opener against John O'Mahony's side represents his sternest test to date.
"We have had a good FBD League campaign, but this is really a step up for us," he said.
"It will be great to have all the college lads back with us for the first time - it'll be a big boost. We have two clashes with Mayo in the next few weeks, but all we are interested in is Sunday's clash."
After deploying midfielder Joe Bergin at full forward in last weekend's win over GMIT, Kernan has hinted that he could play the big Mountbellew man there again in the future. He also welcomed the return of Michael Meehan to action after a long injury layoff.
"He (Bergin) is certainly an option there but you would need high balls going into him," the Armagh man added.
"It was also great to give Michael a run and he was flying, but 20 minutes was enough for him at this stage."
