Seven players were red carded in the Laois v Kildare O'Byrne Cup clash on a busy day in the provincial subsidiary competitions. Five players saw red following an all out melee just after the half hour in Portlaoise and by the end of full time Laois were down to eleven and Kildare twelve players, as the visitors progressed by three points. Great rivals Dublin and Meath could not be seperated in the O'Byrne Cup at Parnell Park after extra time, 2-15 to 1-18. That results means that Dublin will have to travel to Pairc Tailteann for the replay and it will be the first time in 21 years at adult level that the Royals will have home advantage against their neighbours. Elsewhere, Down's win over Derry and Fermanagh's success over Armagh means they qualified for the semi-finals of he Barrett Sportslighting Dr. McKenna Cup. Tyrone and Donegal await them after wins on Saturday night. Kerry are into the McGrath Cup final against UCC after a narrow one point win over improving Tipperary. At club level Kilmurry-Ibrickane won a low scoring AIB All-Ireland SFC quarter-final against Tir Conaill Gaels in Ruislip. In hurling, Limerick lost to UCC in the Waterford Crystal Cup quarter-final, meaning there was no respite for an under pressure Justin McCarthy on Shannonside.
