Cullinane, Jim

July 24, 2008
One of the oldest and most respected farmers in the parish passed away peacefully at his home in Anbally on July 19th. Jim Cullinane was in his ninety fourth year, and was a man to whom people looked to for solid advice. He was involved in many organisations throughout his life and was happiest when he was working on his farm. Always ready to help in the formation of new worthwhile organisations, such as the Cummer Ploughing Society, Cummer IFA (as it was known then) and Tuam Mart where he was one of the founder members. In 1944 and '45 he won the individual County Galway ploughing titles and was part of the Galway All-Ireland Junior Ploughing winning team - also 1944. A parish hall for Corofin was considered a necessity in the 1950s and Jim was a happy committee member when the Dr. Duggan Hall was officially opened in December 8th, 1953. In latter years he was involved in the ploughing as a judge. He also had a keen interest in sport, particularly the GAA, having won a senior county medal with Corofin, as part of the 1946 team. Above all he was a great family man and the sympathy of the entire community is extended to his daughters, Bridgie Egan, Mary Hanly, Nora Duddy, Kathleen Egan, Margaret Allen, Ann Ahern, Julie Coyne, Teresa Higgins, Helen, Dublin; sons Michael, Kilkenny and John, Anbally and all the in-laws, relatives, neighbours and friends. The large turnout for his funeral was indicative as to the esteem in which he was held, not only in Corduff but throughout the county and beyond. After Requiem Mass in St Colmans Church he was laid to rest in Kilmoylan cemetery on July 11th. - Tuam Herald, 24th July 2008
