Canning says Cats are beatable

Joe Canning of Galway
Joe Canning believes Dublin are capable of causing a huge upset against Kilkenny in Sunday week's Leinster SHC final. Canning led Galway to the brink of a famous victory over the All-Ireland champions last Saturday, and has told Dublin they have nothing to fear. "They are there for the beating," the Portumna ace said. "Somebody has to beat them some day. Dublin have come on leaps and bounds this year and even this last few years. It's not just Anthony Daly that's brought them on. They've been there or thereabouts in the last couple of years. "I suppose Anthony has brought a new impetus into them, a new kind of confidence. "They have a brilliant chance. I don't think many people give them a chance because it's Kilkenny in a Leinster final, they're trying to retain it and they don't want to lose to Dublin either. "But if they stick to it, keep their composure and keep to their game plan right the way through, I don't see why they can't beat them." Despite amassing personal tally of 2-9 against the Cats, Canning feels he could have contributed more. He also reckons that the team that beats Kilkenny will have to match them physically. "There was enough of ball. I should have done a lot more with the ball that did come into me. JJ (Delaney, Kilkenny full-back) kind of cleaned me out in the air I suppose for most of the game. It was a bit frustrating that way. We had enough chances. We had nine wides and I think Kilkenny had six, and we still only lost by four points in the end. "I think if you want to beat them you have to put it up (to them) physically. You can't just sit back and let them run all over you. I think a lot of people think we're kind of a soft touch. In years gone past, Galway were just a nice hurling team and when it came down to brass tacks they weren't able to physically match it with the best."
