Loughlin, Michael

July 04, 2008
The Late Michael Loughlin The death took place of Michael Loughlin of Ballybrone. At an advanced age Michael Loughlin had fought a long battle with poor health but never lost his character. Michael Loughlin will be forever remembered by the Turloughmore hurling team of the fifties and sixties as he was the man that brought huge numbers to matches week in and week out. Michael would fill his van with players and they would be like sardines in a tin, but no one cared as it was better than cycling. Stories were told of Michael Loughlin's generosity and the lucky escapes after some hurling games. It is said that as a leading Turloughmore figure held the cup out of the window of Michael Loughlin's van after the replay of 1962 as they drove through Castlegar on the way home amid tremendous jubilation, that the cup was nearly broken with the belt of a Castlegar hurley. Of course many of these stories were changed and added to over the years so we all had to be careful on which ones to believe. Michael Loughlin was a great servant of Turloughmore hurling club and was a leading figure in helping out at the marquees. It was only fitting that members of the Turloughmore Hurling club would form a guard of honour as his remains were taken to the church at Lackagh. Above all else Michael Loughlin was a great family man. He worked hard in providing for his wife Nora and their family, and he also cherished the grandchildren when they came into the family. The remains of Michael Loughlin were removed from Lackagh Mortuary Chapel to the Church of Our Lady of Knock, Lackagh. Following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr John D Flannery, PP Lackagh, burial took place in Lackagh Cemetery. Michael Loughlin is survived by his wife Nora, son Oliver, daughters, Mary Teresa, Ann Marie and Noreen, sisters, Chrissie, Nodie and Kitty, grandchildren, in laws, nephews, nieces and a large circle of relatives and friends.
