Galway chairman faces convention challenge

November 27, 2008
Galway's long-serving hurling board chairman Miko Ryan could be opposed at next month's convention after Kinvara's Joe Byrne was also nominated for the position. Ryan, who is due to step down at the end of 2009 under the GAA's new five-year rule, has been in the chair since succeeding Tom Callanan in 1996. However, it remains to be seen if Byrne will allow his name to go forward. It has been suggested that Byrne, son of the late Fine Gael politican Toddie, may hold off until next year when Ryan vacates the position.
