McIntyre not making any bold predictions

November 20, 2008
Unlike his predecessor Ger Loughnane, new Galway hurling manager John McIntyre is refusing to set any targets for the Tribesmen. Loughnane famously promised on his appointment in late 2006 to deliver the Liam McCarthy Cup within two years, only for it to come back to haunt him. But McIntyre insists he isn't looking any further than the trials he intends holding in the coming weeks. "What we want is to mobilise a squad for next year's championship and hopefully establish a settled team quickly that will do the Galway jersey proud," he said. "There will be trial and error and there will be mistakes made both inside and outside the white lines. Once the spirit is willing, that is all we can ask for." Acknowledging that Galway teams have under-achieved over the past two decades, the Lorrha native said: "There have been lots of reasons for that. Some days, they have up against superior forces, there was bad luck, bad breaks and maybe from time to time, Galway players didn't deliver on the big occasion. Our job is to try and end that cycle as soon as we can." McIntyre joked that he won't be censoring anything written about him or his team in the Connacht Tribune newspaper where he is sports editor. "I won't be writing anything about Galway hurling for the next two years! And I won't be attempting to censure anything by anybody else in the Connacht Tribune. "I have, in the views of some previous managers, dished it out in the past so I have to be prepared to take it if that is the case. At the end of the day, we'll be judged on results and I have no problem with that."
