Kilpatrick: Mayo were in championship mode
May 10, 2013
Selector Enda Kilpatrick admitted that Fermanagh weren't at the same pace as Mayo in last Saturday's 'Together for Sam' fundraising match at Brewster Park.
Mayo, who will begin the defence of their Connacht SFC title against Galway on Sunday week, emerged as 3-14 to 1-12 winners, but Kilpatrick wasn't overly concerned given that the Ernesiders aren't into championship action themselves until June 16.
"We were not going to turn away the chance of playing Mayo. The fact they are in the championship in two weeks' time, we knew it was going to be a benchmark for us," he said in the Fermanagh Herald.
"We were a wee bit of the pace and spilled too many balls. They were definitely in championship mode and I would like to think we would be wehre they are two weeks from our championship match."
He added: "I would be particularly impressed with Che Cullen, John Irvine and Niall McElroy. Those three men hadn't the chance to shine in the National League, but they have been training hard and they have been showing up in training.
"They got their opportunity tonight and that was pleasing for them."
