Ulster Minor Hurling Shield -Final-2012
Fermanagh, 2 gls. 5 pts;
Monaghan, 2 gls. 12 pts.
At St Tienach's Park, Clones
Wednesday 2nd May 2012
From the beginning to the end of this Ulster Minor Hurling Final played at the pristine St Tiernach G.AA. Park Clones on last Wednesday 2nd May, 2012, they host side Monaghan dominated both the playing park and the score board
So completely were they Farney lads in control that they in the opening quarter ran up a telling unswered score of 1 goal 1 point from Monaghan's Brian Greenan and fellow team mate and ace free taker Nial Garland. Finally on the verge of the second quarter Fermanagh's centre half forward Ciaran Corrigan opened his and they Ernesiders scoring, with a well taken point from play. However they more buoyant hosts retaliated in a ruthless scoring fashion, when their ace scoring ace free taker Nial Garland blasted home his side's second and last goal. With second quarter now entered and the park scoreboard now registering 2 goal 1 point for the Farney lads to a mere 1 point for their visitors, doubts started to entered they minds of both they Fermanagh players and their large band of travelling supporters, that a state of return for they Ernesiders.They climate conditions were perfect, with not a wisp of a breeze. And in contrast to recent near Siberian temperatures, there was a near balmy heat in St Tiernach's Park last Wednesday evening. Back to they hurling match, which saw an unexpected mini Fermanagh scoring blitz, in which saw firstly mid-fielder Tommy Cleary and his team mate and late starter Mathew Martin increased they Fermanagh lad's modest scoring to 3 points. However their more dominant opponents more than modest with three points all from Nial Garland. With less than five minutes it looked that this game's first half's scoring was completed for both sides, when out of they Monaghan clear blue sky they very under the scoring cosh Fermanagh side were awarded a mid-field free, which Tommy Cleary fired low and hard towards they Farney defences, such was the speed of the slithor that it richoted of a Monaghan defender and ending up in the host's net for Fermanagh's first goal. With moments to the matches many Erneside supporters saw that major opportune score just before half time, and no doubt that they Fermanagh lads would do a "Tyrone" on they Farney lads.
Fermanagh, 1 gl. 3 pts; Monaghan, 2 gls. 2 pts.
Monaghan Remain In Control
As inn the opening half's beginning it was they dominant Monaghan side that got they scoring going, with six unanswered points all from ace free taker Nial Garland from frees and play. With the third quarter now ending and an air smugness entering they Farney minds, when suddenly out of the blue Fermanagh's full forward Connor Durnien seized on an incoming slithor and then headed for his opponents defences and whilst doing so, let fly with a 'pile driver' of shot and registered they Ernesider's second goal from play. The early fourth now entered and they park scoreboard now registering they Monaghan hosts on 2 goals 8 points, and for the temporary buoyant Fermanagh side on 2 goals 3 points. However for they latter side that was a good as was going to get. It was they Farney side who added 4 more points from Nial Garland and Kevin Crawley to their already telling score, with they Ernesiders tagging on a modest 2 points from Ciaran Corrigan. Now with over thirty one minutes completed this game's referee Brendan Sweeney blew full time on a match, which saw this matches' dominate a game from beginning to end, with they Fermanagh side only infrequently showing glimpses of their scoring skills, which they defeated Tyrone only seven days previously.
