Mickey Harte and Peter Canavan celebrate with the 2003 Sam Maguire Cup in Aughnacloy
Mickey Harte has heaped praise on Peter Canavan ahead of tonight's eagerly-awaited McKenna Cup clash between Tyrone and Fermanagh at Healy Park.
"There is no doubt we tend to use the word genius rather liberally in a sporting context but in Peter Canavan's case it is entirely applicable," the Tyrone manager said of his former star player and fellow Errigal Ciaran clubman, who has made a big impact in his first few weeks as Fermanagh boss.
"He was a truly great player, someone who was imbued with exceptional skills, scoring expertise and an element of true grit that made him the complete package. But we have won two matches we could easily have lost. We will need to be on top of our game if we are to have any chance of getting a semi-final place."
Harte continued: "There is nothing to beat competitive football and I am glad to say that the McKenna Cup has become very competitive. If it wasn't competitive it wouldn't do anybody any good."
