'Building on the Past, Focusing on the Future'
Cavan GAA, Breffni Park, Cavan
Welcoming young hurlers from counties Cavan and Monaghan, and instructors from they clubs from those areas Cavan Hurling Co-ordinator Eoin Morrissey praised them for coming to this first Cavan Hurling Coaching Conference, despite the dangerously inclement weather. Last Saturday 17th December, 2011, beginning at 11.00am an intensive but very enjoyable two hours of outdoor hurling coaching. The conference was honoured, with attendance of Paudi Butler (National Hurling Co-ordinator), Pat Culhane (Limerick GAA Hurling Development Administrator) and Ger Downes (Limerick GAA Development Officer). After registration and as short introductory it was immediately out into winter frost to train on the superb 3g pitch in Breffni Park. For the next two non stop hours an intensive coaching session, with coaches, instructors and they young and very enthuastic hurlers being put through new and some familiar methods of hurling. Continual assessing, praising and infrequently critical of they young hurlers lack of attention of Paudi Butler, Pat Culhane and Ger Downes, were fulsome in their praise of their attentive trainees. Then on the stroke of 1 00 pm Paudi Butler pied Piper like led his band of enthuastic trainees of the 3g pitch to the comfortable shelter of the upstairs conference room in Kingspan Brefinni Park. Once inside the National Hurling Co-ordinator reviewed the day's coaching and training courses. Paudi Butler drew attention to the areas that they players were competent at, and then gently suggested to his young charges room for improvements. His colleague Pat Culhane Limerick GAA Hurling Development Administrator, concentrated on the great improvements of hurling involvement in the Limerick city area, where until quite recently rugby was the king. With new attitudes to hurling and to the methods of training boys, the sport of the ash was once more returning to the Treaty City. Assisting the National hurling coaches, were instructors from the following host clubs of the young camogie hurling attendees.
1. St Feilm's Hurling Club (county Cavan)
2. Cootehill Celtic Hurling Club (county Cavan)
3. Castlerahan GAA (county Cavan)
