The last Sunday in August has become the fixed date for both the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Championship and the Under 14 Hurling Championship Finals taking place. As in recent years the outcome of this hotly contested competition will be in doubt to the final blow of the referee's whistle. Both the senior championship holders Lisbellaw and their arch foes Lisnaskea actively compete in the Armagh and Ulster Hurling League. The St Patrick's side playing Division "1" of the orchard county organised competition, where they have won the majority games defeating top notch opposition such as Derrynoose and Middleton. Their Lisnaskea opponents have already history in the Armagh Senior Hurling League, in which have played twelve matches, winning an eleven, drawn one and conceding none! Therefore an obvious promotion to Division of the league is a taken as definite reward. Their wining match highlight was when Lisnaskea side comprehensively defeated All-Ireland Club Junior Hurling Semi-finalist Naomh Colmcille of Coalisland in ninth round of the Armagh Senior Hurling League tie. In the Ulster Senior Hurling League the Emmett's side had a great run only ending in the Division "4" semi-final against Sean MacCumhall's of Ballybofey.

Who is Going To Win?

It may sound a touch rhetorical to pose such a question, with Lisbellaw dominating this competition with a massive twenty seven wins from the rebirth of the Fermanagh Senior Hurling Championship in which they were the inaugural winners. However history may count for nothing, with a gung ho Lisnaskea side replete with new hurling stars. such as Shea Curran, Francis McBrien and Kevin Maguire in defence, Paul Teague at mid-field. In attack the Emmett's boast Paul McGolderick renowned for scoring abilities from dead balls are from play. Perhaps Lisnaskea finest hurling talents are they tried and tested three McManus brothers, with Jason in defence and both Paul and Colum in attack. However two other brothers Aidan and Barry Smyth are the earthy and morale mainstay of the Emmett team, when others are about to wilt they pair will not only cajole but will lead by example. Their side line mentors of Mick Shine and Sean Jackson both posses management skills in abundance, with their current Armagh Senior Hurling League success still redolent.

Lisbellaw on paper and more importantly on the pitch are a truly formidable foe, with twenty seven Fermanagh Senior Hurling Championships wins to correctly boast about. Whilst they haven't a clean sweep of Division "1" in the current Armagh Senior Hurling League, they are believed to be in the top three of that competition. Lisbellaw though initially involved in Division "2" of the Ulster Senior Hurling League withdrew own to a spate of injuries. Lisbellaw's line out will be dramatically different from last year's championship final and they will be without the vastly experienced and talented Declan McGarry in attack and the youthful Mathew Teague in defence. Doubt also lingers regarding the availability of former regular goalkeeper Pater McEvoy, who's place has been more adequately taken by under age hurling star Dwayne McPhillip's. St Patrick's dominance of Fermanagh hurling at almost all levels in this county is due their simple

Philosophy of getting the boys when young and then training then in the three attributes which make up a good team, loyalty, skill and dedication. John Duffy is the hurling connoisseur's idea of a complete hurler tenacious in attack and fierce in defence. At Lisbellaw's top right or left corners is the elusively goal and point scorer Sean Corrigan. The McGarry brothers of Cathal in defence J.P. at mid-field and Brendan normally filling the full forward added an important spinal column to the St Patrick's side. Wexford born Karl Kehoe an almost impossible attacker to impede never mind stop!

The side line management of Sean Duffy, Seamus McCusker and Garry Winterson have behind them a vast stock of playing at club and county level. The trio have also presided over Lisbellaw who won both Ulster Hurling League and Championship Competitions in 2008. A truly formidable outfit of team talent. An outstanding afternoon of hurling championship ties at both Senior and Under 14 levels. The victory will go to the team that has the collective belief in winning through the game from beginning to the very end.
