A club footballer taking part in RTE's Celebrity Bainisteoir series needed over 100 stitches to a head wound after colliding with a concrete post.
Conor Doonan from Irvinestown in Co. Fermanagh suffered the injury while playing for his local St. Molaise club against Meath side Nobber in Nobber last Saturday. The 31-year-old civil engineer was rushed by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he spent two hours receiving stitches.
Explaining how the player sliced his forehead open just above his eye, St Molaise chairman Liam Donnelly said: "It happened during the match when one of the Nobber players went for the ball. There were big posts at the side of the pitch and his head came in contact with the post."
The Irvinestown team is managed by comedian Andrew Maxwell, while RTE presenter Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh is over Nobber.
"It spoiled the day. Andrew Maxwell was very concerned. Conor would have been one of his main players and would have been filmed a lot being interviewed," Donnelly added.
