Derrylin O'Connells celebrate new pitch opening
August 06, 2010
The Derrylin O'Connells club last weekend celebrated the official opening of its new playing field, brought about at a cost of approximately £200,000.
Work on the new field, which is the same size as that of GAA headquarters at Croke Park, had started in January 2009 with renowned Fermanagh firm Prunty Pitches leading its development.
Derrylin O'Connells club secretary Tommy Curry paid tribute to local supporters and businesses on the ground, as well as the Sports Council of Northern Ireland, for the financial support which brought this about.
He told the Fermanagh Herald, "To raise money for the deposit, we ran a gala ball which was very successful. This was thanks mainly to local businesses who attended. It was held in the Slieve Russell and we had 1060 people there.
"It made a considerable amount of money which paid off all our debts and left us with an amount we needed for the deposit so as to get this project started.
"The Sports Council of Northern Ireland then stepped in and gave us a very substantial grant."
