Saturday's results round-up

March 06, 2010
Cork continued their good run in NFL Division 1 while there were also wins for Armagh, Meath and Antrim this evening.

Cork moved clear at the top of Division 1 with a narrow 1-19 to 1-17 win over Galway at Pairc Ui Rinn.

Conor Counihan's men led by 1-10 to 0-6 at the break thanks to Pearse O'Neill's goal but were left hanging on at the end after despite holding a seven point lead entering the final ten minutes.

Gary Sice goaled and with John Hayes sent off for a second yellow card offence, Galway pushed forward at every opportunity with two late points leaving just two between the sides when the full time whistle went.

In Division 2 Tipperary earned their first point of the campaign as they recovered from a slow start to draw with table toppers Down in Newry. The home side led by four early on but Tipperary turned that around and led by a 1-6 to 0-8 at the break.

The Mourne men picked up the tempo in the second period but found the Premier men tough to break down and a late burst of Tipperary scores earned them a 1-11 to 0-14 share of the spoils.

A late point saw Armagh shade Laois by a single score at Portlaoise. There was little to separate the sides throughout and when the home side drew level in injury time, it seemed they would get something out of the game. However, Armagh made it two wins on the trot with a late winner, 0-13 to 0-12.

In Pairc Tailteann, Westmeath nearly made it a double over Meath, having seen their U21's easily beat their Royal neighbours earlier in the day. The Maroons were poor in the first period and Joe Sheridan's goal had the home side 1-8 to 1-2 ahead at the break.

However, Westmeath bossed the second period and led by 2-8 to 1-10 with time nearly up before two late scores earned a somewhat fortuitous win for the home side.

Antrim maintained their top of the table position in Division 3 with a 0-17 to 0-8 win over Fermanagh at Casement Park.

In the re-fixed NHL games there were wins for Mayo, Wicklow and Longford, while NUIG claimed their first Fitzgibbon Cup success in 21 years with an extra time success over Waterford IT.

There were four Cadbury's Leinster U21FC games played this afternoon with wins for Dublin over Louth after extra time, Westmeath against Meath, Carlow over Offaly after extra time and Laois away to Wicklow.
