Cross won't be taking St Pat's lightly - McConville
November 06, 2008
Oisin McConville has insisted that Crossmaglen will not be taking Fermanagh champions St Patrick's of Donagh lightly in the opening round of their provincial title defence.
McConville recalls the year his club ended the long wait of a decade to recapture the Armagh SFC title as being the same year they went on to lift the All-Ireland crown, and thinks that a new team coming into the fray, like St Pat's, is something that Rangers will have to be wary of.
"We remember when we won our first Armagh title after 10 years, we went on to win the All-Ireland," said McConville. "So teams coming out of their county championship can be hungry for more, just the way we were.
"I don't know what St Patrick's attitude will be when they play us on Sunday, but we're not taking them lightly. We've come unstuck too many times to be doing that again.
"St Pat's are fresh too and they don't know what to expect from an Ulster Club Championship campaign. So that freshness can sometimes work in you favour.
"In saying that, over the past years experience has stood to us big-time, in terms of when things are getting tight you hold on to the ball and make the right decisions, whereas other teams might find those situations a little bit harder.
The Crossmaglen sharpshooter, who hung up his inter-county playing boots at the end of the season, has conceded that his club side's form hasn't been dazzling thus far, but is hopeful that the game in Oliver Plunkett Park this Sunday will see the players rediscovering their form.
"We haven't played well this season," he admitted. "All we want is to start playing well. I suppose when we came under pressure in the county final we pulled out all the stops and won the match. But, apart from that, we've been poor all season. It's always in us to play well, it just a matter of getting it out of us."
